Being Married: the “One Thing”…

One of the questions, I was asked yesterday was “what is that One Thing that you’ll recommend for a great marriage?” – in the context of our conversation, I replied “concentrate on Vertical intimacy/relationship and every Horizontal relationships would fall in line”.

Love is an essential ingredient for any relationship, particularly marriage. Love is not an Emotion that comes and go, it is a Choice or a Decision we chose based on an act of our will. To love Unconditionally as commanded by God – we MUST believe and confess Christ as Savior and Lord, this act brings the indwelling of the Holy Spirit within us.

The Holy Spirit then bring us gifts and bear Fruit through us. The first and one essential Fruit is LOVE. Not only should we love God but understand His love for us. Many times Jesus said those who love me obey my commandments – so love is doing what God’s love letter to us says, not wishing we did, or knowing it by heart – but doing it.

When our individual relationship or intimacy with God is in tip-top shape, then we obey his word, then other (horizontal) relationships in our lives benefits from our Obedience – choosing to Forgive, choosing to die to self, choosing to love Unconditionally, etc. So, focus on your Vertical relationship and the horizontal relationships (marriage, parenting, ministry, etc.) would work itself out – naturally.
