Just Thinking: Self Esteem vs. Humility

Self Esteem is how one perceives him/herself, depending on the criteria (wealth, status, weight, etc.) of life one chooses to believe. One could have a healthy self-esteem or a low self-esteem, whichever one we perceives ourselves to be always have good or adverse effect on our roles (spouse, parent, friend, etc.) on earth.

Humility is when one realizes that he/she is not the captain of the ship that runs ones life. Unlike the tons of self-help philosophical crap on Facebook that encourages you to take charge of your life. Humility is knowing that without surrendering to Jesus Christ first as Savior, then in this case as LORD, one would not achieve that which he/she was sent here to do.

Moses who wrote about himself as the most humble man on earth (something we’ll call pride today), knew enough not to move an inch when God said He won’t lead Israel anymore (Moses won’t even move with an angel leading). When you realize that after accepting Christ as Lord and Savior, then dying to self and been led by His Spirit and obedience to His written word (immediate and total) is humility.

When you have a low self-esteem and you think that is humility – you are not only very far from the truth, you are also calling God a liar. God already said He created you in his image, through Christ He calls you friend, through Christ you are a Royal-Priesthood, a Holy nation, born to proclaim the goodness of God in the land of the living.

When you start to think that humility is using the word “sir” and “ma” or other endearing words or curtsying, when you rule your own life by not being obedient to God’s written word or yielding to the leading of the Holy Spirit then you are PRIDEFUL.

Never ever determine your self-esteem by the assignment of other people. We are all special before the throne room, however, we have different assignments. As apostle Paul wrote in 1 Co. 12 – there are many parts to the Unit, for it to function well, the function of the hand is different from that of the eye, the function of the ear is different from that of the leg, yet each part is unique and strategically placed with talents and abilities.

Displaying and showing off wealth, talents and grace, to show that God has (is) blessing you with unnecessary worldly fanfare, only points to who seats on the throne of your life and that you are not yielding fully to the leading of God’s Spirit nor utterly obeying His word, that my friend is PRIDE.

May heaven help us see ourselves as God sees us, may we learn to take ourselves (our mini kingdoms) off the throne of our lives, and let God through His Spirit lead and guide us, on this earthly journey.
