Pattern and Principles: SIN

Rom. 6: 23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”.

The word sin in Greek is “Hamartia”, which literally translate to “missing the Mark”. I guess the next question once we know the meaning of sin is, whose Mark?

Unfortunately, in our generation, the word SIN is visually equated with pornography, mass murder, adultery, and other evil concorction of human wicked mind, hence we are able to give some “sins” a break, since they are not as bad as the sins we consider bad.

The MARK we miss, is the Mark set for us by the Covenant we exist under. The OT folks existed under the Law of Moses (some still do today), but for those who have accepted Christ as Savior and Lord, the MARK for us is God’s written WORD and the leading of the Holy Spirit (very important to know and hear the Holy Spirit, distinct from other stuff we hear – which includes ourselves).

Human sinful nature primarily defaults to SIN (SELF), it is only when we accepts Christ as Savior and Lord, chose to DIE to SELF and live for Christ (in us) and Obey His written Word, that we start competing with our inherited sin nature.

As new spiritual rebirth and citizens of the Kingdom of heaven, we are required to DAILY die to our SIN NATURE, Paul wrote about this to the churches in Rome (Rom. 12: 1-2 – living sacrifice) and Galatia (Gal. 2: 20 – crucified with Christ). Not only did God give is written instructions on dying to our SIN nature, He also gave us His Spirit, so when we yield, the Holy Spirit leads us into ALL TRUTH.

So please stop seeing SIN as major or minor league, rather as Missing the Mark, from lying to being stubborn, to whatever is clearly articulated in the Bible or you are convicted by the Holy Spirit. the good news is 1 John 1: 9 – knowing we are still human, God gave us a break (we call it Grace) “if you confess your sins, He is able and just (a legal term) to forgive us and cleanse us of all un-righteousness”.

Like Jesus told the woman caught in the act (adultery), “Go and SIN no more…”. Find out the MARK, God has set for our existence on earth, as spouses, parents, ministry leaders, etc. and ask for help to stay within the MARK (see Joshua 1: 8)
