Pattern and Principles: Guarding your Heart (MIND)

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) – “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it”

Luke 6:45 (NKJV) – “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks”

Both king Solomon and Jesus Christ spoke what science has now revealed to us, please note that it is God who at His time revealed this knowledge to scientist.

From neurology and other related brain science, we know that the brain is where the function of the heart lies, thinking and storage. We know that information come to the human soul through the human body (five senses). We know such information are processed in the frontal lobe and stored in the hippocampus and the amygdala. We know that all these parts of our brain are connected by neuro-transmitters, carrying information around the brain in seconds.

We know, first through the Bible and later through science, that what we store in our heart or brain comes through our five senses, what we chose to hear, chose to see, chose to touch, chose to taste and smell. Sometimes, these information are heard, learnt and stored involuntarily or subconsciously. So, we have control or MUST GUARD what we allow into our heart.

We know that what we’ve allowed in and stored is how we behave and what comes out of us in everyday conversation, this is why Jesus said, it is from the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. So, a godly person guards what he/she brings in and/or deliberately brings in godly information (worldview).

A new bride and a new groom, would come into marriage with what they’ve known (taught and learnt), some would have the grace of unlearning (theoretically) through pre-marriage counseling or education, but the process of renewing their mind (heart) starts after the romantic love stage (emotional high) disappears and both now have to call on godly principles they’ve learnt.

The only avenue for the enemy and the world system (kingdom of darkness) to reach us is through our MIND, the enemy wants his principles which is all about your comfort, not faithfulness and obedience to God, to be what is abundant in your heart, so that is what comes out of you and what determines your character.

Guard your heart, it is the wellspring of life, and out of what you’ve allowed in and stored, comes out what eventually determine who people say you are (or fruit you bear) based on your character.
