Pattern and Principles: Senses (physical and spiritual)

Heb 5:14 – But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. (KJV used the word SENSES)

According to apostle Paul in 1 Thess. 5: 23, we humans are tripartite in nature, we have a spirit, a Soul (mind, will and emotion) and a Body. Our body is physical in nature and it is composed of our five senses (Seeing – eyes, Smelling – nose, Hearing – ears, Touching – finger tips, and Tasting – tongue) and the body systems (reproductive, neurological, endocrine, etc.).

Information from our world (physical and spiritual) come into our Soul, via our senses, that is why we are warned to be careful what we allow into our soul via our senses (unfortunately, not to many heed that advice).

As important as our physical senses are, there are more critical senses, our Spiritual SENSES. Some don’t even know they exist, and those who know ignore it.

Spiritual EYES – Eph. 1: 18 – “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people..”

Psalm 119: 18 – “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law”.

Spiritual EARS – Rev. 3: 22 – “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches”.

Isa 32:3 – “Then the eyes of those who see will no longer be closed, and the ears of those who hear will listen”.

Mat 13:15 – “For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them”.

Spiritual TONGUES – Psa 34:8 – “Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him”.

Luk 14:24 – “I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet”.

Spiritual TOUCH – Mar 5:28 – “..because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed”.

2Co 6:17 – Therefore, “Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you”.

Spiritual SMELL – Eph 5:2 – “And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma”.

Phl 4:18 – “Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God”.

This write-up would be too long, if I start to explain each spiritual sense, but i’m trusting God that as YOU study each one, that the Holy Spirit (the best teacher) would bring revelation to you. Watch what you allow in through your physical SENSES and be sensitive to your spiritual SENSES.
